Falelima Tree Nursery

Over many years terrain has worked in Samoa, supporting projects such as renovating village school buildings and providing clean drinking water. In 2015, we helped establish a Native Tree Nursery in Falelima, on the western side of Savai‘i. The villages along this coast are often affected by cyclones and storms, which have become more frequent due to climate change.

This community-driven effort involved careful, thoughtful listening, applying for grants, holding community meetings, and working closely with families. The tree nursery was created to grow native plant seedlings, collected from the surrounding lowland coastal forests, to be planted along the coastline to replace trees that were damaged in storms.

The nursery also provides educational opportunities for youth and the local school.
