Mabel
Mabel is a multi-family residential community in the heart of Chelsea, which prioritizes design excellence, sustainability, and connections to natural systems. The landscape design is envisioned as a series of outdoor spaces that create habitat and contrast the urban bustle with intimate garden spaces for respite and contemplation.
At the ground level, the building wraps around a central courtyard that serves at the main focal point as users enter the building. A linear viewing garden runs along the building’s entrance, which opens up to a central seating space. Reclaimed pavers create a dynamic texture while ferns and grasses occupy the negative space. A pair of skylights serve as a sculptural element and bring light to the cellar below.
The second floor terrace promotes active and social uses for recreation and group gathering. A sinuous metal planter curves around the terrace inviting the user to explore the space in contrast to the surrounding rectilinear geometries.
The occupiable roof takes advantage of its aspect by creating opportunities to sunbathe and capture views of Midtown Manhattan. A series of planters create rooms, including spaces for quiet conversation, outdoor cooking and dining, and hosting large groups.
