BETANCES RESIDENCES

In collaboration with CookFox and Breaking Ground, terrain developed a street facing garden and interior courtyard for seniors at the Betances Residences in the South Bronx. The Passive House certified development includes 152 supportive housing units and focuses on biophilic and active design to provide safe and healthy housing for at-risk seniors.

The landscape design focuses on accessibility and flexibility of program while maximizing views of planting to the interior of the building. This is accomplished with large lobby and adjacent amenity space windows, which welcome residents and frame views of the courtyard connecting residents to nature and allowing natural light into the interior spaces. A curated planting palette with emphasis on four-seasonal planting and thoughtful lighting design were of special consideration for residents who may have been unable to get outside year round. Artificial turf was included for senior fitness and as a play area for young visitors.
