THE CORDEN

The Corden, a multi-family, supportive housing building for survivors of domestic violence opened in the Longwood neighborhood of the Bronx in 2022. Terrain designed a communal, residential courtyard in collaboration with MAP Architects and a public basketball court and park for adjacent NYCHA residents. Many children call the building home and the courtyard design creates “playable ground,” rather than a playground. Topography, artificial turf, bleacher seating, custom timber benches, and a deck provide ample room for exploration and play within a contained outdoor space. The courtyard is heavily screened to provide privacy and security for residents without feeling heavy handed. Permeable pavers add a pop of visual interest and draw residents out into the landscape. The adjacent basketball court is fully renovated and open to the public.

BASKETBALL COURTS

As part of the design process, existing basketball courts belonging to the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) were improved by introducing new basketball hoops, providing additional furniture and restriping and repainting the courts.
